Lord Patten, the last Governor of Hong Kong, urged supporters to make history together by electing George Lee, Conservative candidate for London’s Holborn and St Pancras constituency, as the UK’s first ever Chinese MP in the 2010 General Election.

Speaking at a fund-raiser for the parliamentary candidate, the Chancellor of Oxford University, Lord Patten said “British parliament needs to reflect the diversity of people in the country. With his exemplary experiences both in the public and the private sectors, George Lee will be the ideal choice to represent the people of Holborn & St Pancras, and help the whole country in the recovery process. As China becomes more important in the world’s economy, George will be able to actively engage and promote businesses between China and our country.”

Already receiving tremendous support from the local community, George Lee aims to bring a fresh perspective to politics. He said “I am not a career politician. My whole life has been about change. It’s my story, from childhood poverty in Hong Kong to working in my parents’ takeaway in Portsmouth, from changing attitudes to racism as an Inspector in the police force, to managing complex changes in business. People are now looking to see changes in politics. I have always wanted to make a difference to my community and as the Conservatives will bring fresh ideas and a new direction for the country.”

On the frontline

David Davies, the Conservative MP for Monmouth, also joined the event to give support to Lee. He said “George worked on the frontline as a Chief Inspector for the Met Police. He has a deep insight in the real problems facing the people. It is great news that George is putting himself forwards. We need people from different background to take part in politics.”

Lee is confident about the election and is focusing on fund-raising to extend the campaign to reach more voters. “I want to mobilised the silent majority. I want to tell people they have the power to change politics. Labour might have a historical stronghold in the constituency, but we don’t have to make do with the old ways. We need to bring back politicians who listen to the people, who know what people need and who serve the people.”

The fund-raiser was held at China Tang in London’s Dorchester Hotel with the support of Sir David Tang, the enterprising Shanghai Tang fashion guru, and attended by over 100 guests.

People demand changes in politics

“I am very encouraged by the support of the business community, as the financial cost of running an effective

campaign against a party in power can be very high. The small donations from the community, however, are even more important, because their contribution is very much their mandate for me to speak on their behalf and fight for the changes they demand.” explained Lee.

George Lee is standing for Conservative Parliamentary MP for Holborn and St.Pancras. Lee began as one of the youngest and the first Chinese Inspectors in the UK and has since acted as a Managing Consultant at Gemini Consulting, a Financial Services expert at Capco, the Managing Director of his own management consultancy company (Cambridge Business Solutions Ltd) and an Executive Vice President at T-Mobile International. George Lee was, most recently, a Senior Partner at Oliver Wyman Consulting where he specialised in revenue strategy and management consulting.
